Moby Wrap

The Moby Wrap is a must-have new baby item for so many families.  That said, it can seem a bit intimidating, and lots of families (including me, unfortunately) don’t start using it until baby #2 comes along.  Then they look back and think ‘why didn’t I have/use a moby wrap with my first!??!’  So much crying (by mama and baby!) can be avoided if you learn to love your moby wrap.

Here are the FAQ for moby wraps based on my experience of helping countless folks, from my Grama to the new parents at Bundle, use the wrap.

1) The Moby Wrap is NOT going to spoil your baby.  Babies like to be held, they like to be swaddled, and they like to sleep.  Being in the moby wrap let’s them do all 3 at the same time.  It is baby bliss.  You do not need to ‘teach’ you baby anything (like to nap in the crib or to self-soothe), your job is just to meet his needs.  There will be plenty of time later to draw the line and teach lessons to your child.  For now, enjoy your perfect little baby, and hold him as much as you can.

2) The Moby Wrap is very easy to use, really!  It is one big long piece of fabric.  If you live near Boulder you can come into Bundle and get a hands-on demo of how to put it on.  It takes about 30 seconds to put on once you get the hang of it.  I would leave the Moby Wrap on and just take baby in and out of it, especially during the newborn months.

3) The Moby Wrap can be pretty hot in the summertime, but I wear it with a little tank top underneath and kind of treat the Moby Wrap as my shirt.  Then It’s not so bad.  In the winter put the Moby Wrap on and then put your coat on over that.  If you wear your husband’s coat you should be able to zip it up over your baby too for some super-cozy winter walking.

4) You can nurse very easily and discreetly in the Moby Wrap.  In fact, I would have people peek into the wrap to see the baby, not realizing that I was nursing.  I could even nurse while walking around town…hands free!

5) Screaming baby?  Here’s a great trick: put the baby in the moby wrap (bonus if you can put the moby wrap and the baby onto someone else, like your sister or mom).  Then walk out the front door, or send the designated family member.  9 times out of 10 baby will be asleep by the time you get to the mailbox.

PS if you have a bad back or want to be able to carry a heavier child try this non-stretch wrap style carrier, the Dolcino.
