Unsolicited Parenting Advice

I have a parenting tip that is so easy and effective I have to share it even though you didn’t ask. This is for kids at or over 2.5 year old.

Scenario: your child wants to do something all the time, and you are only ok with them doing it sometimes. So it becomes a constant issue, because your kids never know when you might say yes, so they ask for said thing all the time. And cry for it, and beg, and generally drive you mad.

Examples: Starting the night sleeping in your bed, chewing gum, watching a cartoon.

Solution: Give each thing it’s own day. This immediately solves the problem. There is no more crying and begging about any of these issues, because everyone knows the routine. So at our house each vice has it’s day: Tuesdays we chew gum, Saturdays the kids get to fall asleep in my bed, Sundays we watch a cartoon… And the kids seem to think that the issue is out of my hands, like gum on Tuesday is some universal law that I cant change or bend. So instead of begging for gum, they ask how many sleeps until Tuesday. End of story.

Caveat: You have to follow through with the routine even if they forget. This lets them relax; they know that whenever the hell Tuesday rolls around, they will get gum, and they don’t have to worry about it.
