Cancer & Chemicals; Babies & Pregnancy

The President’s Cancer Panel released a study that hits home for all of us who are pregnant or raising young children.  You can read gobs of detailed information and analysis about the findings online, but the basic announcement from the mainstream and the tippy-top of the ladder came as a blunt warning:

“Only a few hundred of the more than 80,000 chemicals in use in the United States have been tested for safety”

Nicholas Kristof for the New York Times writes: “In particular, the report warns about exposures to chemicals during pregnancy, when risk of damage seems to be greatest. Noting that 300 contaminants have been detected in umbilical cord blood of newborn babies, the study warns that: “To a disturbing extent, babies are born ‘pre-polluted.'”

The report came with suggestions, the foremost:

“Particularly when pregnant and when children are small, choose foods, toys and garden products with fewer endocrine disruptors or other toxins.”

Two other recommendations were to store water in glass or stainless steel containers, and to microwave food in glass or ceramic containers.  Two of our biggest sellers at Bundle have been our glass water bottles and glass kidishes, which is highly-tempered glassware for kids.

Very sobering news, and a strong reminder to splurge for the organic strawberries.
