The verdict is in: Compostable diapers are NOT allowed in City Composting Programs.

Update: Bundle now composts diapers!  Check it out here.

Are  biodegradable diapers really biodegradable?  Yes!  Compostable? Yes & No…

There are, thankfully, a growing number of diapering products that ARE biodegradable and compostable – NatureBabycare, GroBaby, and G-Diapers are among of our favorites!.  These products are made without plastics and with materials that easily break down.  Surprisingly, they are also pretty soft and appealing to put on your baby.   While they will absolutely decompose, hence being safe for compost, they are NOT allowed in Boulder’s Municipal Compost program through EcoCycle.  Amy, from A1Organics which manages EcoCycle’s composting program, said that there are too many variables and biohazard risks to workers which, in my opinion, seems totally understandable although disappointing.   So, if you have a hearty personal compost and don’t use tons of these diapers, throw ’em in!… (the pee-pee only ones, of course!)…  The ammonia is great for your compost!
